    About Chila de la Sal

    Chila de la Sal is the seat of the municipality of the same name in southern Puebla, in the Mixteca Baja and the Acatlán valley. The name Chila comes from the Nahuatl cili, little snail, and tlan, place of plenty: "place where little snails abound". The village stands at about 950 m and had 838 people in 2020.

    The municipality, about 142 km², ranges from 700 to 1,500 m and is among the hottest in Puebla: its climate is very hot and semi-dry throughout, with mean temperatures of 24 to 26 °C, lows of 10 to 12 and average highs of 34 to 36. It gets 600 to 800 mm of rain a year. It borders Chiautla to the north-west, Axutla to the east, Tecomatlán to the south-east, Tulcingo to the south and Xicotlán to the west.

    From above, the village sits among the dry hills of the Mixteca. It is a region on the way between Izúcar de Matamoros, Chiautla and Acatlán de Osorio, far from big cities: Cuautla in Morelos and Atlixco are about 90 km away in a straight line.
