About Ahuehuetitla
Ahuehuetitla is the seat of the municipality of the same name in Puebla's Mixteca, about 127 km from the state capital. The name comes from the Nahuatl ahuehuetl and titla: "among the ahuehuetes", the Montezuma cypress that grows along rivers. The village stands at about 1,170 m and had 1,371 people in 2020; the municipality, about 108 km², is crossed by the Sierra de Acatlán, and its streams, which only run in the rainy season, drain to the Atoyac River. It borders Tehuitzingo to the north, Piaxtla to the south, Acatlán to the east and Chinantla to the west.
Farmers grow maize, beans, squash, sesame, watermelon and peanuts, but what sets Ahuehuetitla apart is beekeeping: the municipality produces good-quality honey that is sold across Mexico and abroad. People also make pottery and reed baskets.
The most important monument is the 17th-century parish church in the village. The main festival falls on the third Friday of Lent, a movable date between February and March.
