About San Pablo Anicano
San Pablo Anicano is the seat of the municipality of the same name in Puebla's Mixteca, in the south of the state, about 20 minutes from Acatlán de Osorio and about three hours from Puebla city. The village stands at about 1,120 m and had 2,008 people in 2020. It borders Acatlán, Piaxtla, Tecomatlán, Guadalupe Santa Ana and San Pedro Yeloixtlahuaca, and has old boundary disputes with some of them since the village's map was lost.
Its main building is the 16th-century parish church of San Pablo Apóstol, badly damaged in the earthquakes of 15 June 1999 and 19 September 2017. Beside it stands the bandstand, built in 1890 and remodelled in 2011.
The biggest festival is for the Señor de la Paz, on the first Tuesday after Holy Week, also called the gourd fair for the colourful lacquerware from Olinalá, Guerrero, sold there. Locals say that until a few decades ago engaged couples waited for this fair to buy, besides a gourd, a decorated wooden box to keep the wedding dress in; buying one announced an upcoming wedding. People also recall the custom of asking for a bride's hand through a person of standing, the tehuexi, usually someone with money in the village.
