About Ixcamilpa

Ixcamilpa is the seat of the municipality of Ixcamilpa de Guerrero in south-western Puebla, next to the state of Guerrero. The name comes from the Nahuatl ichcatl, cotton, milli, maize field or fertile land, and pan, on: "on the cotton field". The village stands at about 700 m and had 1,439 people in 2020; the municipality, about 308 km², had 3,695 in 2010.

The region was home to Nahua people, conquered by the Spaniards in 1522, and belonged to the district of Chiautla. On 30 April 1912 the first restitution of land under Emiliano Zapata's Plan of Ayala took place here. During the Revolution the village held off two attacks in 1917: the first led by Guadalupe Lucero on 7 May and the second by his brother Francisco Lucero on 5 August; both failed and both men died. In 1930 Ixcamilpa became a free municipality.

The climate is tropical with dry winters, a mean temperature of about 25.7 °C and about 820 mm of rain a year. Dry tropical forest dominates, with patches of oak, and the hills are home to iguanas, coatis, white-tailed deer, rabbits and turtles. The municipality borders Cohetzala, Albino Zertuche, Xicotlán and, to the south and east, the Guerrero municipality of Olinalá.
