About San Agustín Tlaxco
San Agustín Tlaxco is one of the larger localities of Acajete municipality: the 2020 census counted 6,995 people at about 2,337 metres. The growth is recent. In 1900 it had 481 residents, in 1960 just over 2,000 and in 1980 already 4,285, reaching nearly 7,000 by 2020, which makes it closer to a big village than a hamlet.
The name pairs the patron saint, Augustine of Hippo, with tlaxco, which in Nahuatl means ball court. The new parish church of San Agustín dominates the centre and is the lead picture of the locality.
Acajete covers roughly 177 km² in central Puebla, east of the Puebla-Tlaxcala metropolitan area, and its elevation runs from 2,280 to 3,200 metres. It borders Tepatlaxco de Hidalgo, Amozoc, Cuautinchán, Tepeaca and Nopalucan, and to the north Tlaxcala, specifically Huamantla and Ziltlaltépec. The municipality had 72,894 inhabitants in 2020 across 66 localities, and its Sierra de Acajete is part of the scenery seen from the old federal highway 150.

Drive from Puebla: 25 min, 25 km
San Agustín Tlaxco is about 22 km in a straight line from the city of Puebla (approx. 25 minutes by car, estimated) and another 22 km from Ixtenco, already in Tlaxcala. From Puebla you take the free federal highway 150, which crosses Acajete municipality, and then the local road to the village. By bus the usual route is from Puebla's CAPU to Acajete, then a colectivo or taxi for the last stretch; no fixed timetable is published, so ask at the ticket window which services run along the 150. To the north, Huamantla (Tlaxcala) lies across the state line. By car the trip from Puebla is short.
