About Santa María Nenetzintla

Between Acajete and the slopes of La Malinche, Santa María Nenetzintla is one of the larger villages of the municipality of Acajete. Some 4,667 people lived here in 2020, at around 2,320 m. The name joins the Virgin Mary, the village's patron, with the Nahuatl Nenetzintla, from nene, collective, tzin, idol, and titla, place: "place of many idols".

Acajete, the municipal seat, belongs to the Tepeaca valley. Its Nahuatl name means "bowl of water". Before 1521 Popoloca and Nahua groups lived there, and when the Spaniards arrived it had about 12,000 inhabitants; the town was officially founded between 1521 and 1523. The municipality runs from the slopes of La Malinche down into the valley, and Nenetzintla sits on that band of farmland at the foot of the volcano.

The building that marks the village is its church of Santa María. For travellers, Nenetzintla is close to Amozoc, famous for its charro ironwork, and about 22 km from the Pueblo Mágico of Ixtenco, on the far side of La Malinche in Tlaxcala.
