About Ayapango de Gabriel Ramos Millán
Ayapango is a small place, 3,975 people in 2020, at about 2,450 m in the valley between Amecameca and Tenango del Aire, with Iztaccíhuatl as its backdrop. The scholar Ángel María Garibay read the name as Ayauhpanco, "on the edge of the mist". The state government made it a Pueblo con Encanto on 14 November 2008.
The earliest record of Ayapango dates to around 1430, when the noble Aquiauhtzin Cuauhquiyahuacatzintli was born here. He wrote a song called "La enemiga" (The Female Enemy) and performed it at the palace of Axayácatl in Tenochtitlan; the ruler liked it so much he adopted him as a son. After the conquest the town came under Amecameca and, for church matters, under the Franciscans of Tlalmanalco, and the colonial town was laid out from 1563. It became a municipality in 1868, though in the late 19th century the state dissolved it for lack of money and merged it into Amecameca. In 1950 it added the name of Gabriel Ramos Millán, a lawyer born here who founded the National Corn Commission and became known as "the apostle of corn"; he died in a plane crash on Pico del Fraile, beside Popocatépetl, almost in sight of his birthplace.
What sets the town apart are its old "French-style" houses: thick adobe walls, two-sided roofs of flat clay tiles, a wooden loft for storing maize, and large patios. Many keep a custom of pre-Hispanic origin, naming each house for its character, and carry a plaque with that name; the best known are the Casa Grande and the Casa Afrancesada.
The parish church of Santiago Apóstol, laid out as a Latin cross, keeps traces of a 16th-century convent whose porter's lodge now serves as the entrance to the priest's house; its façade and tower mix plain and Solomonic Baroque, and inside hang 18th-century oil paintings of Purgatory. About 2 km south, on a hill of volcanic rock, stand the badly plundered Franciscan ruins of El Calvario, where the Passion is staged at Easter. The town still has the century-old ash tree where Zapatistas and federal soldiers were hanged during the Revolution. Before leaving, the hamlet of San Cristóbal Poxtla sells cheese, requesón and butter; El Lucero, its main dairy, offers tours.
