About San Diego Huehuecalco

San Diego Huehuecalco lies about 3.5 km south of Amecameca's centre as the crow flies, at 2,511 m, and had 2,079 residents in 2020. The name is Nahuatl: huehuetl, old or elder, calli, house, and the locative co, rendered as "place of old houses" or "in the house of the elders". Saint Didacus of Alcalá, San Diego, is the patron.

The chapel, painted yellow and red with a small bell tower, is the village's landmark. Its big moment is the feast of San Diego: Amecameca's municipal site gives 13 to 16 November, with a rodeo (jaripeo), the traditional dance of the Moors and other dances. The rest of the year the village is quiet and farming-minded, much like a municipality whose economy rests on agriculture, livestock and trade.

The reasons people come to the area are in Amecameca, a few minutes away: the parish of the Asunción, the Señor del Sacromonte shrine on its hill, the museums of the Panoaya hacienda, and the road up to Paso de Cortés between Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Amecameca's tianguis sets up on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

How to get to San Diego Huehuecalco

Drive from Cuautla: 45 min, 40 km

Everything runs through Amecameca, on federal highway 115. Drivers leave the Puebla motorway at Chalco; the distance from TAPO is about 53 km and the trip takes around 50 minutes (Rome2Rio). Direct coaches from TAPO are advertised as "Ameca", leave about every 20 minutes and take a little over an hour. Colectivos board on the zócalo's north side, and the large-bus terminal is a few blocks northwest.

Huehuecalco is 3.5 km south of Amecameca's centre (air distance), roughly 10 minutes by taxi by my reckoning. No public-transport route is published. Coming from Morelos, Cuautla is about 35 km off by air.
