About San Matías Cuijingo

San Matías Cuijingo is a delegation of the municipality of Juchitepec in the east of the State of Mexico, at 2,504 m. It had 7,532 inhabitants in 2020 and is the municipality's second-largest locality after the seat, which lies about 4 km away. Tepetlixpa is roughly 8 km to the south. Popocatépetl can be seen from the village, and the Cerro del Águila rises within its land.

The name comes from the Nahuatl Cuixinco, tied to hawks, and residents explain it with two legends. In the first, an eagle perched on the hill flew off in fright at some cuijis (lizards), hence "place of lizards" and the hill's name. In the second, the statue of San Matías the Apostle, carried in procession from Tepetlixpa towards Juchitepec, grew heavy and brought rain as it left the village; a church was built for it, and the statue was found lying at the altar, taken as a sign that it wanted to stay.

Local life is agricultural: maize, chamomile, oats, wheat and beans, plus calves, sheep, pigs and chickens. The feasts are San Matías the Apostle on 14 May, San Isidro Labrador on 15 May and the Virgin of Guadalupe on 12 December, and each barrio has its own as well. The climate is temperate, with frosts from December to February and a dry spell from January to March. The village used to be called simply Cuijingo; the current name was adopted in 2010.
