    About San Marcos Jilotzingo

    San Marcos Jilotzingo is the second most populous locality in the municipality of Hueypoxtla, with 9,808 residents in 2020 (8,523 in 2010), in the north of the State of Mexico at the edge of Hidalgo. It sits in an undulating valley of low hills at roughly 2,200-2,330 m, and its 3,872 hectares are shared among more than 620 ejido members. The name comes from the Nahuatl xilotl (young ear of corn), tzin and co: "place of the corn", meaning good harvests. It is divided into four barrios (San Antonio, San José, San Marcos and San Pedro) and two colonias, 2 de Julio and El Progreso.

    The ground holds a long history: Wikipedia says that in the region's limestone zones you can see mollusc fossils from a sea that existed over a hundred million years ago. Today people grow maize, beans, broad beans, nopal, barley and wheat, there are peach, fig and pear trees, and many residents work in construction in Pachuca or Mexico City. The climate is temperate and semi-dry, with 500 to 700 mm of rain.

    In the centre stand the parish church of San Marcos and a bandstand. The calendar runs 25 April (San Marcos the Evangelist), 6 August (Divino Salvador), 12 December and Holy Week. There is a weekly market with fruit and vegetable stalls, butchers and tortillerías, and a public library with over 5,000 volumes.

    How to get to San Marcos Jilotzingo

    Drive from Pachuca: 55 min, 50 km

    San Marcos Jilotzingo lies southeast of Hueypoxtla, the municipal seat, and north of Zumpango de Ocampo and San Juan Zitlaltepec; to the east are Tizayuca (Hidalgo) and San Bartolo Cuautlalpan. It is about 43 km in a straight line from Pachuca and about 24 km from Tepotzotlán, roughly 50 and 30 minutes by car depending on traffic. The Circuito Exterior Mexiquense and state roads reach the municipality of Zumpango; check the exact route from the Mexico–Pachuca highway on a map.

    By public transport Wikipedia mentions a México–Jilotzingo bus line and two taxi stands in the village; it is not confirmed timetables or the departure terminal. You can also reach Zumpango de Ocampo, which has buses with terminals in Mexico City and Pachuca, and continue by taxi.
