Tlapanaloya

Tlapanaloya, formerly Tetlapanaloyan, is the second most populous locality in the municipality of Tequixquiac (6,466 people in 2010) and works as a delegación, east of the municipal seat. Its Nahuatl name is read several ways: "broken lime stone", "place where the stone is worshipped" or "where men break stone in a quarry", which fits the limestone, stony soil of hills such as Monte Alto. The Salado de Hueypoxtla river crosses the town and irrigates the farmland to the south.

It was one of eleven towns of the Tepanec province of Hueypoxtla that paid tribute to the Mexica, settled by Otomí and Nahua people. In 1542 it was granted in encomienda to Juan Díaz del Real, who built haciendas on native farmland, and in 1820, when the municipality of Tequixquiac was created, the town was annexed to it even though Hueypoxtla claimed it.

What can be seen: the Baroque parish of the Asunción on the main square; the colonial bridge over the Salado on the royal road toward Tequixquiac and Hueypoxtla; the hacienda La Esperanza, on the royal road to Ajacuba; and in the barrio of La Rinconada the Casa Grande, a house where pulque was made in the 19th century and which still sells it. Oral tradition keeps the legend of the witches of the hill in colonia Pajaritos, said to appear as lights in the night.
