Waterfall 8 km southwest of Taxco
A chain of turquoise limestone pools and small cascades in the hills southwest of Taxco, bluest in the dry season.
The Pozas Azules are a string of natural pools in a stream valley near the village of Atzala, in the hills southwest of Taxco. Spring water rich in dissolved limestone flows down the valley and, as it goes, leaves behind calcium deposits that build rounded walls of porous tufa, little dams, natural slides and small waterfalls. The minerals also give the water its milky turquoise color, which is the reason most people come.
The site is run by the local community. The lower pools are the most accessible, with steps, railings, bridges and swimming platforms a short walk from the entrance, and they get busy on weekends and holidays. Higher up the valley the pools are wilder and the path means hopping across wet rock, so local guides take visitors there for a tip. There is also a zip line, and camping is offered.
Timing matters. The water is clearest and bluest in the dry months, roughly November to May; after heavy summer rain it can turn murky. To protect the water, sunscreen, lotions and soap are not allowed in the pools.
What to see and do
Swim in the lower pools, which have steps and platforms close to the entrance.
Hire a local guide to climb to the upper pools, which are more natural; wear shoes with good grip.
Ride the zip line over the valley.
Go on a weekday in the dry season for the bluest water and fewer people.
