About Laguna de Tuxpan

The Laguna de Tuxpan is a small lake about 5 km east of Iguala, beside the village of Tuxpan, at roughly 750 m above sea level, with the Autopista del Sol running along its shore. It is the main body of water in the area and the place where people from Iguala come at weekends to eat, swim, fish and take a boat out. Part of its water is used to irrigate the fields around the city. Tuxpan itself, a village of about 2,000 people, keeps adobe houses with tile roofs and celebrates its fiestas in the traditional way.

A local legend says the lake appeared when someone spilled a bottle of seawater into a well: the water kept rising until it flooded the village, and when the people came back, a lagoon lay where their houses had been. Today the shore is lined with restaurants, some of them at the lake's piers, serving mojarra al mojo de ajo, fish broths, rabbit in red chile, duck in orange sauce and iguana in green broth, along with seafood. The lake has mojarra farms, and boatmen offer rides; it has also hosted water-sports events such as the Nauticopa.

The lake has suffered from rubbish, laundry detergent and untreated sewage running into it. In recent years the state government has been building Tuxpan's first drainage network, with collectors that pump wastewater to a treatment plant, rebuilding the access road and clearing part of the shore to make a beach-style area for visitors. A walking trail begins beside the Cuernavaca–Iguala highway and follows a channel through thick vegetation down to the lake.
