Town 13 km southeast of Taxco
A Nahua village southeast of Taxco where most families weave palm into baskets, mats and tortilla holders; buy straight from the weavers.
Tlamacazapa is a Nahua village in the hills southeast of Taxco, inside the same municipality, and one of the most important palm-weaving communities in Guerrero. More than half of the people here make a living from the craft, and the whole process happens in the village: families gather wild palm on the surrounding slopes, dry it in the sun, often spread over the rooftops, and then weave it with a knotted technique passed down from one generation to the next.
The range of pieces is wide: baskets of every size, the round tortilleros that keep tortillas warm, mats, bags, table runners, decorative figures and newer designs for shops in the cities. The weavers' skill has drawn attention well beyond Guerrero, including an exhibition by INAH dedicated to the creativity of the women weavers of Tlamacazapa.
This is not a tourist town. There are no galleries or restaurants aimed at visitors, and it is a working community with real economic needs, so the point of coming is to see the craft where it is made and to buy directly from the people who make it, at a fair price. Go with respect, ask before taking photos of people, and bring cash.
What to see and do

Walk the main street and the plaza around the village church.
Getting there
Tlamacazapa is about 40 minutes from Taxco by car on local roads, and there is little signage, so going with a driver or guide from Taxco who knows the village is the easiest option. Travel by day and bring cash.
