Waterfall 10 km east of Taxco
A wild canyon east of Taxco with turquoise pools, a cave pool and waterfalls for jumping and rappelling; go with a guide.
Mil Cascadas, also known as Las Granadas, is an ecotourism park in a canyon east of Taxco, toward the border with Morelos. The Las Granadas river runs through it, dropping over a series of falls and filling more than ten pools, many of them a striking turquoise thanks to the limestone, before disappearing into underground passages in the rock.
This is an adventure spot rather than a place to lounge. The full circuit down the canyon takes about five hours and mixes hiking on dirt and rock paths, swimming, jumps into pools from about two to ten meters, and rappels down waterfalls of up to around 35 meters. One of the highlights is a pool inside a cave, which you enter by jumping in. Guides lead the technical sections and provide the gear, and several tour operators in Taxco and Mexico City run trips here.
The park has basic facilities, including toilets and areas for camping and picnics, but there is no cell signal. The pools are at their best after the rainy season, when the river has plenty of water but has had time to clear. Bring quick-dry clothes, shoes with good grip and biodegradable sunscreen.
What to see and do
Do the full guided canyon circuit, about five hours of hiking, swimming and jumping.
Rappel down one of the waterfalls with the guides' equipment.
Jump into the cave pool, one of the park's best-known spots.
Camp overnight to split the canyon into two easier days.
