About Chilcuautla

Chilcuautla comes from Nahuatl chilli, "chile", and cuauhtla, "grove": the grove of chiles. In Otomí the town is called ʼMiza. It is the municipal seat, in the Mezquital Valley, at 1,868 metres on plateau ground with a semi-dry temperate climate: the weather station gives a yearly mean of about 17 °C and around 340 mm of rain. Its waters flow to the Tula River.

Wikipedia records that the Jesuits arrived in the 18th century, that the municipality was created by decree on 2 June 1850 and that in 1865 it was a municipalidad of the Ixmiquilpan district. In 2020 the seat had 1,262 inhabitants, 6.67% of the municipality: 587 men and 675 women. Across the municipality maize, beans, alfalfa and zucchini dominate, and there is a weekly tianguis.

Its big moment is August. The patron-saint fair of the Virgin of the Assumption ran from the 15th to the 17th in 2025 and centres on the parish, in whose atrium the cantoya balloons are launched: 2025 was the festival's ninth edition, with launches on the nights of the 16th and 17th. Alongside it come a kite festival, a food showcase in which pomegranate is the main ingredient, craft sales and a music festival at the town theatre. Earlier editions mention dishes of nopal, fig, oven-baked rabbit and frijol quebrado, plus local wines and liqueurs.

The municipality also holds the ruins of the Hacienda Demiñho, on the road between Tezontepec de Aldama and Tunititlán.
