About Panales
Panales sits at 1,765 metres above sea level, about 5 km west of Ixmiquilpan as the crow flies, in the heart of the Mezquital Valley. The climate is dry and semi-warm, the land mixes low hills with sierra, and local runoff drains toward the Tula River sub-basin inside the Moctezuma basin.
The census figures tell a story of late growth. In 1900 the village had 643 people and in 1930 only 200; by 1950 there were 804, by 1990 some 1,827, and in 2020 INEGI counted 3,742 residents.
The local calendar hangs on a few fixed dates. The patron-saint fair honours Saint Michael the Archangel from 27 to 30 September, and the festivities of the Señor de Jalpan take place early in the same month. Day of the Dead and Holy Week are observed, and at carnival, on Ash Wednesday, ashes are imposed and regional dances are performed as part of the community's cultural-preservation events.
To round out a visit, look toward Ixmiquilpan, home to the Augustinian church and convent of San Miguel Arcángel, with its plateresque façade and a set of sixteenth-century murals, plus the Hñähñu Culture Museum and several hot-spring bathing resorts nearby.
