Puerto México

Puerto México stands at 2,202 metres in the Valle del Mezquital, on low-sierra terrain that drains toward the Tula river sub-basin. It belongs to San Agustín Tlaxiaca municipality and, although the land is hills and scrub, the locality counts as part of the Pachuca de Soto metropolitan zone. The climate is semi-dry and cool: about 15.6 °C on average, some 630 mm of rain a year and the odd frost, with a recorded low of −3.4 °C in 1997.

INEGI counted 756 people in 2020 (360 men and 396 women), up from 671 in 2010, so the population is growing. Nearly every home has electricity and piped water, and under 2% of residents identify as Indigenous. The village has no lodging; the nearest hotels are about 17 to 21 km away.

Several small communities lie within a few kilometres: Colonia Guadalupe Victoria (1.5 km), Tulancalco (3.1 km), Benito Juárez and Ignacio Zaragoza (about 3.5 km), and to the south Ixcuinquitlapilco, with over 2,500 residents. The closest heights are Mesa Redonda (2,453 m), 1.5 km southwest, and Cerro El Caracol (2,465 m). In the municipal seat, during the feast of San Agustín, the four neighbourhoods carry the crosses down from and back up to the Cerro de La Providencia.
