Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel stands in central Jojutla at Calle Cobarrubias 102, beside the Alameda park. According to Spanish Wikipedia, the image of the Señor de Tula was moved from the Temple of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe to the high altar of San Miguel, which is why the complex is tied to that devotion. An architecture write-up describes the site as a place of worship with more than five centuries of history.

On 19 September 2017 the earthquake that struck Jojutla brought down the San Miguel Arcángel church in the Centro neighbourhood; the press described it as more than 128 years old. The municipality was among the worst hit in the country: the quake destroyed more than 2,600 homes.

The Santuario del Señor de Tula was built on the same site, designed by Dellekamp Schleich with AGENdA Agencia de Arquitectura. According to Obras Expansión the work took 14 months and cost 18 million pesos. It is an open structure of about 450 square metres with no doors or windows, a plan based on a Romanesque cross, a roof of brick vaults on arched concrete walls, and a tropical garden around it that cools the interior. Dezeen adds that a bell salvaged from the original church is displayed outside, facing the plaza. It was a finalist for Obra del Año 2020.
