Poxindeje de Morelos

In Otomí, poxa is "to well up" and dehe is "water": Poxindeje means "place where water wells up", a name whose spelling has drifted over the years to its present form. The heart of the village is Plaza Morelos, with its bandstand; the Wikimedia Commons category for it holds about twenty photographs, most of the square and six of the bandstand alone.

The village sits in the heart of the Valle del Mezquital at 1,960 metres, on level ground within the Actopan river sub-basin. The climate is semi-dry and temperate: about 16.5 °C on average through the year, rainfall around 600 mm that falls mostly in September, and winters that can dip below freezing.

In 2020 it had 1,107 residents in 309 homes, nearly all with electricity and piped water. About 14% of people identify as Indigenous and 5.5% speak an Indigenous language, always alongside Spanish. The nearest neighbours are Bocaja to the north and San Antonio Zaragoza, the largest locality in the municipality (3,607 people), some 1.7 km east, where many of the area's taco stands, barbacoa and carnitas places are. To the south and southwest rise Cerro Tuy (2,250 m) and Cerro Xhinfi (2,195 m).
