About La Estancia

La Estancia takes its name from the hacienda that landowners built on the spot, and the Hacienda de la Estancia dates from 1842. Today it is a locality in the municipality of Actopan, in the Mezquital Valley, northeast of the city, on flat ground at about 2,140 metres. The soil is alluvial and phaeozem, over volcanic andesite, and the climate is semi-dry and temperate. A curiosity of the area: just over 2 km north and northeast of La Estancia runs the boundary between the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and the Sierra Madre Oriental, which is why there are faults and some seismic activity.

The population has grown from 582 (in 1921) to 1,341 in 2010 and 1,715 in 2020. There is a preschool, a primary school, a telesecundaria and a campus of ICATHI, the state's job-training institute. People live from trade, farming, livestock and poultry.

At the table, the local dishes are lamb barbacoa cooked in an underground oven and ximbó, rooster meat wrapped in maguey leaves and also baked underground, both celebrated by Actopan each July at its Feria de la Barbacoa y el Ximbó. Community festivities follow the religious calendar (Holy Week, Christmas, Day of the Dead and, on 12 December, the Virgin of Guadalupe), and the main fair is on 8 October, marking the founding of the ejido.
