About Unidad Morelos
Unidad Morelos is the everyday name of the Unidad Habitacional José María Morelos y Pavón, an urban locality in the municipality of Xochitepec, at about 1,256 m above sea level and 5.4 km north-west of the municipal seat as the crow flies. INEGI censuses show it growing from 7,992 people in 2000 to 9,178 in 2005, 10,625 in 2010 and 11,805 in 2020, when it had 3,097 occupied homes. It is the second-largest of the municipality's 90 localities, after Xochitepec itself (21,862), and part of the Cuernavaca metropolitan area.
It is a residential neighbourhood rather than a destination: there are no monuments or sights of its own, and it is better to say so plainly. Around it lie Colonia Aeropuerto, a kilometre to the north, the Ampliación Lázaro Cárdenas, a kilometre and a half to the west, and Eterna Primavera, roughly two and a half kilometres in the same direction. The climate is warm and semi-arid: the mean annual temperature is about 21.3 °C, April is the hottest month and January the coldest, and about 712 mm of rain falls in a year.
Do not mix it up with CICATA Unidad Morelos, the research centre of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional that many searches tie to this name. It stands at Boulevard de la Tecnología 1036 in Atlacholoaya, also in Xochitepec, and not in this estate. People who come here are mostly residents, or visitors passing through on the way to Xochicalco, the archaeological site that UNESCO listed in 1999 and that lies about 4 km away in a straight line (approx.).
How to get to Unidad Morelos
Drive from Cuernavaca: 20 min, 20 km
The estate is in the north of Xochitepec, about 8 km by road from the municipal seat (about 9 minutes by car, according to Pueblos América) and about 11 km as the crow flies from Cuernavaca, which is approx. 20 minutes by car. On a map, search for "Unidad Morelos" or its full name, Unidad Habitacional José María Morelos y Pavón, so you do not land at the IPN's CICATA, which is in Atlacholoaya.
Coming from the capital, the route is the Autopista del Sol (95D) to Cuernavaca and then south towards Temixco and Xochitepec. Pullman de Morelos buses cover the stretch to Cuernavaca, from the Terminal Central del Sur at Taxqueña. From central Cuernavaca to the estate We found no published official route; a 2019 route blog mentions routes 11 and 16 running from the estate to Cuernavaca via the Crucero de la Cruz, the Xochitepec entrance, Acatlipa and Temixco, but that information is old. A 2026 Diario de Morelos guide says the metropolitan colectivo routes are being added to Google Maps, where you can choose public transport and compare.
